How are the Workshops Organized?

project-choices.gif

The workshops are organized as individual, personalized, self-driven projects. Every one has their own unique way of learning and a hidden voice to be heard. As such, the best way to get in touch with that inherent potential is to embark on something that interest you first.

Then as the project expands, you get exposed beyond what you started out from.

What’s the philosophy of the studio?

This graphic says it all. All-in-all, art must be first be fun, explorational, and expressive. Forget the rest of the stuff first. Only when the individual enjoys it and starts to tap in do we begin on the deeper stuff like observation and working on perceptual issues. The craftsmanship is only for people who are interested in applied arts or professional practice, or those who want to do art in a particular way.At the studio, the participant discusses his/her needs. I will assist and guide along those lines. I have no fixed pattern in mentoring my students. Neither do I have fixed agendas to fulfil. The studio is not about me, it is about the individuals who participate. This approach has proven to be the best at developing the most out of the hidden potential in my students.

What are the mediums you use and what style do you teach?

I have been asked this question a few times, so I am penning it down for reference sake.I can guide students in water color, oil, pastel, charcoal, arcylic, digital media, animation, video editing, pencil, ink, etc etc.Something that I have to emphasize —> my workshops are not about learning about particular styles or particular mediums. That is one of the terrible mistakes schools make in guiding students. You can use any medium. I will guide you in how to have fun with that medium and learn ART from there.

How are you able to cope with such vast array of medium and form?

I am a very mischievous guy who has tried many stuff, failed countless of times, and learnt from them. I do not proclaim I am hence a master at everything, but I have experience to guide most people through in art. I have been heavily involved in art education for more than a decade, as well as practiced art for the past 30 over years.

I want to just learn watercolor or oil or pastels? Can I?

Sure. The workshop welcomes you to work on whatever you choose. It is up to you to determine how you want to progress. I am only a guide, you determine where you want to go. Learning to trust yourself is the first step towards doing art.

How are ideas shared and discussed

There are the formal and informal ways. The informal is done through in-workshop discussion and through this web2.0 site. The formal will be monthly presentations that are open to everyone over a relax atmosphere.

How much are the charges?

$50 per session. Basic materials will be provided for the 12 and under. Special materials and professional materials must be self supplied by the participants. Payment is by per session basis.

    Dear Mr Tien Yang,
I have gone through your website and it is fascinating what you do with these children. I have learnt a lot. Thank you for that. I would like to ask for your point of view. According to you what could be the causes behind students’ (14 to 16 years old)negative approach and apprehension towards painting? Some of my students which join the upper class that is coming from Junior school, would definitely be afraid to paint. May be you could make proposals of activities that could help as well. I would be very grateful to you if you could help me with that issue.
    Thanking you in anticipation.
